Bio
Estela Gonçalves is a 1st generation PhD student in the History Department. Originally from Brazil, over a regional analysis centralizing Minas Gerais state, her main research tries to understand how the construction of black masculinities occurred in the whitening context of Brazil, considering the pre- and post-abolition background (1880-1920), the social consequences for formerly enslaved people, and the ramifications of colonial roots in the formation of racial identities.
Areas of interest: Race, Gender, Black Masculinities, Atlantic Diaspora, Brazilian Post Abolition Period, Minas Gerais, 19th-20th centuries.
