Christian Ramirez is a dual-major PhD candidate in Chicano/Latino Studies and Department of Sociology specializing in the areas of migration, Latinx sociology, historical sociology, decolonial theory, and colonial Mexico. His dissertation engages 17th- and 18th-century historical processes in the Veracruz coast of Mexico specifically focused on the rebellions initiated by people of African and indigenous descent. Alliances between the two cultural communities helped form self-liberated autonomous spaces known as palenques; Ramirez's scholarship brings this history to the forefront of Chicano/Latino Studies.
